Team Sixteen Racing; the successful Illinois based Dirt Late Model team of former UMP National Champion Tony Izzo Jr. has made it official. In 2008, they will launch a Driver Development Program designed to usher Team Sixteen back to the forefront of Dirt Late Model competition. Female Open Wheel standout, 18-year-old Shannon McIntosh has been named as the driver assigned to the program.
Recognized as one of the top young female talents in the country, McIntosh’s career began in Quarter Midgets at age five which led to 270cc Micro Sprints by age eleven, 600 Mini Sprints by thirteen, and most recently USAC Ford Focus Midgets. It takes a lot of support from sponsors in order to compete in an elite series of Dirt Late Model Racing and the only chance of gathering the support needed is having something to offer. Sixteen Racing feels that they have something special to offer with driver, Shannon McIntosh.
“We are very excited at Team Sixteen Racing to have Shannon joining our team. With the growing popularity of Dirt Late Model racing; increased television coverage, Tony Stewart’s involvement at Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio as wells as Late Model racing at venues such as The Dirt Track at Lowes Motor Speedway, we feel that this program will be an excellent opportunity for everyone involved-the team, Shannon, and our supporters. Everyone at Team Sixteen is confident that Shannon has the talent and desire to be very successful and turn a lot of heads at this level.”
Under the guidance and coaching of Tony Izzo Jr, Team Sixteen will begin testing with Shannon in early ’08. In early Spring Shannon will be racing on a weekly basis at LaSalle Speedway in a Limited Late Model and as things progress in ’08, the schedule will be expanded to include some high profile Lucas Oil and World of Outlaw shows in the Super Late Model.
“We are very much looking forward to what lies ahead for Team Sixteen with Shannon in the driver’s seat.”
The first event on the calendar for Team Sixteen and Shannon McIntosh will be an appearance January 12-13 at The Midwest Speed Expo in Springfield, Illinois at the Illinois State Fairgrounds. Shannon will be signing autographs and t-shirts will be available for sale.
McIntosh, who is currently a freshman at The University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and an employee of The Richard Petty Driving Experience at Lowes Motor Speedway also plans to run a Sprint car at local tracks in Ohio and possibly some midget events as well when her schedule with Team Sixteen allows.
Nationally recognized as one of the top young female talents in the sport, her Dirt Late Model debut is sure to receive a lot of attention. Team Sixteen’s plans for McIntosh in ’08 include High Profile TV races against the best Dirt Late Model drivers in the world.
Team Sixteen will introduce their new driver at the Midwest Speed Expo in Springfield, Illinois on Jan. 12-13th, 2007. The expo is held at the Illinois State Fairgrounds and has seen a continued growth every year. The trade show/swap meet/car show is held in conjunction with the UMP (United Midwest Promoters) Banquet for Late Models and Modifieds.
You can bet a lot of focus will be centered on Shannon as she makes her first appearance alongside the #16 Super Late Model made famous by former UMP National Champ and Team Sixteen Owner, Tony Izzo Jr
